@ Centre for Science & Art, STROUD (Gloucestershire) Sand-up comedy without the need to remember any material! Many people would love to try stand-up but are too scared to give it a go. If this is you, you could let your fear hold you back, or you could come along to this fun day to get on the microphone and give your confidence and self-belief a boost. Or have you done stand-up and are feeling in need of some new inspiration? Then come along and get a creative shot in the arm. In this supportive, enjoyable session, we strip away the fear of standing up in front of people at the microphone by finding your natural funniness and bringing it out through fun games and exercises. Each time I do this session, I refresh the content, bringing new creative exercises each time (so you can come back as many times as you like.) In every session you will learn stand-up tricks and techniques, and come up with ideas for stories and jokes, through a series of stand-up improv exercises. You will be able to work independently and there are also some games that are collaborative so you can bounce off others. The exercises are set up in such a way to make it natural for you to find the funny. The spontaneity of the class avoids overthinking and brings the energy and immediacy to your performances that stand-up needs. The trick is to hold onto that feeling in performance even when you have done a lot of prep. (Stand-up is all about preparation but making it all look casual and unprepared.) There are many ways of finding a playful comic voice, so everyone is encouraged to be comic in their own way. You don’t need to be loud and charismatic to be good at stand-up; you just need to find your authentic voice and perspective. You can be dull and serious and, approached in right way, that might be why you’re funny! This is a safe, friendly and non-judgemental space —our goal is to have fun, build confidence, and demystify the art of getting on stage making people laugh. Plus you can bring a friend for a reduced fee for you both! By the end of the session you will feel much more confident about doing comedy and you'll leave inspired and full of ideas.
