New Year, New Script: A Christmas/New Year Comedy Writing Development Workshop

Michael in the US Office has a birthday - and in a 2021/22 run of the Xmas/New Year sessions we explore rewriting.

A special Xmas/New Year four part workshop for comedy writers.

7pm-9pm UK time (GMT),

2nd, 9th & 16th December 2025 and 6th January 202

£95 (On Zoom)

This intensive workshop provides the structure, inspiration, and feedback you need to start the new year with fresh characters, scenes, and stories in hand.

Or perhaps there's an idea you've been sitting on, one you've never fully committed to developing—now is the perfect time to start.

You’ll be set up to get cracking on a new project in 2026 whether you're planning to write a sitcom, a comedy-drama, or a series of sketches.

What to Expect

* You can arrive with no ideas and leave with a wealth of characters, situations, scenes, and the groundwork for a new script.

* Alternatively, bring a concept you'd like to develop further.

* Material can be geared towards sitcom, comedy-drama, or sketches suitable for social media, YouTube, or even the live stage.

* And I'll set manageable homework designed to be achievable during the busy holiday period, with the Christmas/New Year break available to work on your ideas.

* All in a small group for ease of sharing work. In this intimate setting, you will share work weekly, which we will read out and discuss in class.

Course Themes

As usual with my classes, these sessions will be in my Classic Zoom Format (TM!) where we'll analyse example comedy clips (sitcom, sketch, and comedy-drama) nominated by me and you. This analysis will provide techniques and inspiration for your own characters, scenes and situations.

Taking inspiration from the most pressured, awkward, and absurd situations of the season (and year-round social life), each week we’ll focus on a topic designed to throw up big colourful character and make them collide.

Develop existing characters, create new ones, and place them in challenging situations to generate scenes and narratives.

Session 12nd December 2025

Dining, Dates & Drinking

Pretentious restaurants, bad dates, drunken antics, embarrassment, and bad behaviour in celebratory contexts (Christmas and year-round birthdays, etc.).

If you like, send me sitcom/ comedy drama  scenes and/or sketches on these topics for inclusion in the session by 30th November

Session 29th December 2025

Celebrating & Partying

Birthdays, leaving 'dos,' corporate-mandated "fun," and work gatherings. The pressure to enjoy yourself.

Any clips by 7th December

Session 3

16th December 2025

Christmas Chores, Chaos & Charmless Family Members

Familial friction, logistical nightmares, terrible gifts, returning unwanted presents. Difficult relatives (judgmental aunts, inappropriate uncles), and reignited sibling rivalry.

Any clips by 14th December

Session 46th January 2026

New Year – Resolutions, Change Your Life, Self-Improvement

The pressure to 'start fresh,' the comedy of human failure and aspiration, the absurd failure of ambitious plans, detox diets, and the existential panic of remaining fundamentally the same person.

Clips by 4th January

Join us for some productive, entertaining sessions over the Xmas and New Year period and get your next scripts ready to go for 2026.
